WAY OUT
A magazine about autonomy, adventure, technology, and the good life.
A magazine for a world that has fundamentally changed.
Way Out is for travelers, flâneurs, vagabonds, people with active outdoor lives, people stuck in urban environments who want adventures, and everyone looking for a more self-directed way to live. It is about using technology to advance your goals, not someone else’s.
Inside the Zero Edition.
The full table of contents will appear in the finished edition. For now, this is the architecture: six sections built around tools, ideas, experience, and practical autonomy.
Whole Systems
The ideas behind autonomy, technology, community, and alternative ways of living. Featuring From Counterculture to Cyberculture and the intellectual ancestry of Way Out.
Gear / Tools
Useful things tested against actual life. Urban hiking shoes for seventeen-kilometer days on cobblestones, cold-weather denim, and small technologies worth carrying.
Body / Mind
Human capability as something worth understanding and experimenting with. Nootropics, caffeine, performance, evidence, hype, and experience.
Digital Tools
The useful side of the machine world. Apps, privacy, navigation, AI, communications, and technologies that increase rather than diminish autonomy.
Field Notes / Nomadics
Travel, walking, cities, movement, and what you learn by actually going somewhere. Europe, places worth knowing, and reports from outside the managed world.
Explore the editor’s photographic journeys through Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas at Erik Travels the World →Books / Information
Books as tools. Reviews, recommendations, and reader responses, with useful ideas flowing into Way Out and back into the world.
The Way Out Index
Short recommendations, books, apps, gear, places, and useful things that do not need a full essay but deserve a place in the system.
Whole Earth was about access to tools. Way Out is about access to alternatives.
We are a free and creative people and might as well get good at it.
So far, remotely administered power and glory, through government, big business, formal education, and church, have succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure real gains. In response, a realm of intimate, personal power is developing: power to conduct one’s own education, find one’s own inspiration, shape one’s own environment, and share the adventure with whoever is interested. Way Out seeks and promotes the tools that aid this process.
